As the increase in demand returns, American Airlines may not have enough pilots and staff to execute an ambitious summer flying schedule. Indeed, this has resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
American Airlines and Delta briefly furloughed 1,600 of their pilots from the federal government’s Payroll Support Program. Consequently, it was more difficult to return pilots to active status immediately. This is because US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations require fresh training.
